Two groups featuring well-known free jazz musicians appear at ShapeShifter Lab on Tuesday, July 29. The NEW YORK FREE QUARTET with Steve Cohn (piano, shakuhachi), Chuck Fertal (drums), Michael Moss (soprano and tenor saxes, bass clarinet, flutes), and Larry Roland (bass, poetry) appear for their world premier performance. The CONNIE CROTHERS/DAN ROSE DUO features world renowned pianist Connie Crothers and virtuosic guitarist Dan Rose. Coming from a fine-tuned affinity, these two are both rhythm section and soloist for each other’s performances, in a continuous, mutually spontaneous creation of music. Both groups represent the finest in contemporary jazz.
NEW YORK FREE QUARTET:
Music, art and poetry surge through the spirit of pianist & Shakuhachi innovator Steven Louis Cohn. Steve has conducted master classes at the Paris National Conservatory and has had his compositions commissioned for performance with the Wantanbe Dance Company in Japan. With over 25 recordings in his name, Steve has played with the likes of Eddie Henderson, Sonny Simmons, and Reggie Workman. http://thestevecohn.com/
A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Chuck Fertal has studied privately on drums with Alan Dawson and Sam Ulano and studied piano with a scholarship from Connie Crothers for two years. He has played with jazz luminaries Sonny Stitt, Dorothy Donegan, Cecil Payne, worked with Mal Waldron 1979 through 1987, plus Cameron Brown, Cecil McBee, and the Steve Cohn trio with Reggie Workman.
As a reed player (tenor and soprano saxes, Bb and bass clarinet, flute, and non-western instruments) and composer, Michael Moss has been actively involved in the music scene for many years, leading his own musical groups including Mike Moss/4 Rivers, Free Energy, Zone and Michael Moss/Billy Stein Duo and appears on many recordings. Moss has performed with Sam Rivers, Dave Liebman, Paul Bley, Burton Green, William Parker, Mark Whitecage and Perry Robinson. His latest work appears on 4th Stream Records on New York and Me in a collaboration with storyteller Regina Ress, Intervals with guitarist Billy Stein, and Natural with the Willamette River Pirates on Mahaffay’s Musical Archives, all released in 2013. www.m2-theory.com
Larry Roland is an acoustic bassist and poet. He has performed with trumpeter Raphé Malik, Charles Gayle, Sabir Mateen, Steve Swell, Daniel Carter, Mike Wimberly, Marvin “Boogaloo” Smith and many others here and abroad on the free improvisational music scene. Larry’s most recent recordings (2013) are STREETS with the Charles Gayle Trio and Yoron Israel’s VISIONS. As a poet, Larry has been published in several anthologies and magazines and has received multiple awards. Roland also has a solo Bass and Word CD which features his original poetry entitled AS TIME FLOWS ON on the BCG label.
CONNIE CROTHERS/DAN ROSE DUO:
Pianist Connie Crothers is known for her spontaneous improvisation, originality, virtuosity and wide range of expression. Being a student and close associate of Lennie Tristano and in later years recording and performing with Max Roach defined her approach to music. Always getting rave reviews for her recordings and live performances, Connie never fails to amaze the listener. www.conniecrothers.net
Dan Rose worked with Paul Bley early in his career, played in the loft scene of the 1970’s with Michael Moss, Perry Robinson, Mark Whitecage and many others, and recorded with some stellar rhythm sections–Steve Swallow and John Betsch, Victor Lewis and Peter Warren, Ben Riley and Kiyoshi Kitagawa. Rose is comfortable with the whole spectrum of what is considered the American Jazz Motif, “touching on a wide range of feelings and Jazz expressions.” www.danrose.us.com
Hi, This is the press release for a performance coming right up this SATURDAY, JULY 26 IN CATSKILL, NY AT THE BRIDGE ST. THEATER. Hope to see you there! Cover is $10. Bridge Street Theatre is a performance-space-in-process in downtown Catskill. While the main stage is under construction the lobby has opened as a beautiful intimate space for theatre, cabaret and music. MICHAEL MOSS As a reed player (tenor and soprano saxes, Bb and bass clarinet, flute, and non-western instruments) and composer, Michael Moss has been actively involved in the music scene for many years, leading his own musical groups including Mike Moss/4 Rivers, Free Energy, The New York Free Quartet and Michael Moss/Billy Stein Duo, and appears on many recordings. Moss has performed with Sam Rivers, Dave Liebman, Paul Bley, Burton Green, William Parker, Jackson Krall, Nasheet Waits, Billy Stein, Charles Downs, Ras Moshe, Larry Roland, Daniel Carter, Michael Mahaffay, puppeteer Ralph Lee, and led the Jazz Composers Orchestra in his own compositions. He received many Meet The Composers grants. Moss has also worked with a number of established modern dancers including Judith Moss and Rosalind Newman. He appears on 4th Stream Records on New York and Me in a collaboration with storyteller Regina Ress and Intervals with guitarist Billy Stein, plus Natural with the Willamette River Pirates on Mahaffay’s Musical Archives all in 2013. www.m2-theory.com BILLY STEIN Native New Yorker, guitarist and composer Billy Stein has been involved in multiple music scenes in and around NYC for many years. He has worked with mainstream jazz musicians Milt Hinton and Sahib Shihab and free jazz artists including Rashid Bakr. Billy also worked with the Coasters and latin recording artist Joe Blanco. He was a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant to study classical guitar with Leonid Bolotine. Stein leads his own trio which recorded “Hybrids” (Barking Hoop, 2006). Stein and Moss released the collaborative recording Intervals (4th Stream Records) in 2013. www.BillySteinMusic.com The music of Michael Moss and Billy Stein reminds us of the vast possibilities of improvisation. (Moss’s) tenor has a polished glow with an occasional rough edge; his flute is plush and quick silver; his clarinet has the human cry you hear so often in the great klezmer artists. Billy can be assertive, even explosive at times, and his velvety dissonances can give way to brilliant knife-edge notes that sparkle and flash. Ed Hazell Billy Stein has an excellent sense of how to expand the tonality via some excellent chordal sequences. He sets things up for Michael Moss to sound out adventurous, soulful free-wailing lines. Michael turns in beautiful solos on tenor, clarinet, flute, bass clarinet, and even the shofar horn.
